Oscillators and relaxation phenomena in Pleistocene climate theory

چکیده

Ice sheets appeared in the northern hemisphere around 3Ma (million years) ago and glacial–interglacial cycles have paced Earth’s climate since then. Superimposed on these long glacial cycles comes an intricate pattern of millennial and sub-millennial variability, including Dansgaard–Oeschger and Heinrich events. There are numerous theories about these oscillations. Here, we review a number of them in order to draw a parallel between climatic concepts and dynamical system concepts, including, in particular, the relaxation oscillator, excitability, slow–fast dynamics and homoclinic orbits. Namely, almost all theories of ice ages reviewed here feature a phenomenon of synchronization between internal climate dynamics and astronomical forcing. However, these theories differ in their bifurcation structure and this has an effect on the way the ice age phenomenon could grow 3 Ma ago. All theories on rapid events reviewed here rely on the concept of a limit cycle excited by changes in the surface freshwater balance of the ocean. The article also reviews basic effects of stochastic fluctuations on these models, including the phenomenon of phase dispersion, shortening of the limit cycle and stochastic resonance. It concludes with a more personal statement about the potential for inference with simple stochastic dynamical systems in palaeoclimate science.

Various superstable synchronous phenomena in switch-coupled relaxation oscillators

This paper considers synchronous phenomena from switchcoupled relaxation oscillators. This system exhibits a variety of interesting superstable synchronous phenomena. Using a hybrid return map, we can analyze the phenomena almost completely. Using a simple circuit, typical phenomena are verified in the laboratory.

A network of relaxation oscillators based on intermittently coupled capacitors

This paper presents N binary hysteresis relaxation oscillators connected by the Intermittently Coupled Capacitors. The network exhibits various interesting synchronous phenomena. As a powerful analysis tool, we derive a hybrid return map which has one real and N binary states. Using this map, the stability of the periodic synchronization can be analyzed simply by the binary states: it is not ne...

Impact of Distributed Gate Resistance on the Performance of MOS Devices

This paper analyzes fundamental phenomena from threecoupled relaxation oscillators. The system nonlinearity is a piecewiselinear hysteresis comparator and we can explicitly calculate the returnmap and its Lyapunov exponents. Then we clarify generation of chaos,%-torus,3-torus and various kinds of synchronizations. Also, a roughbifurcation diagram is given. It indicates t...

Phase Equations for Relaxation Oscillators

We use the Malkin theorem to derive phase equations for networks of weakly connected relaxation oscillators. We find an explicit formula for the connection functions when the oscillators have one-dimensional slow variables. The functions are discontinuous in the relaxation limit μ → 0, which provides a simple alternative illustration to the major conclusion of the fast threshold modulation (FTM...
